Social Responsibility .

Social Responsibility lies in our DNA

In December, on the fifth day of the month, we celebrate the International Day of Volunteering. This is a very important date for me because I believe that Social Responsibility should be shared by all of us, individuals and companies, and that together we make a difference in our communities and in our country.

In my companies, we have several Social Responsibility projects with a strong positive impact in Angola. We really make a difference because every day we touch people, touch lives and involve everyone in this mission. I am very grateful to our employees who are committed to these initiatives, giving their time and knowledge. Having this broader sense of responsibility towards our communities, locally and globally, brings benefits to everyone.

Volunteering at Unitel began in March 2016, when the STOP Malaria program was launched at the David Bernardino Paediatric Hospital in Luanda. Today, we have more than 1000 volunteers who actively participate in the dozens of Social Responsibility actions of the company.

We have contributed to the reduction of the main causes of mortality and morbidity through the STOP Malaria program, also by donating blood and holding numerous Health Fairs, where medicines and prevention equipment are distributed, we track diseases and teach about healthy living habits.

With our technological capacity, we combine the power of Information and Communication Technologies with our know-how, thus creating opportunities in the area of entrepreneurship and innovation, empowerment of women and training and the development of micro and small enterprises.

But what’s even more special is that we have left our business area and created a Farm in Malanje, our Unicanda Farm. We invested in higher education in Agriculture for 6 young Angolans who are currently responsible for agricultural production and the development of national products in the community of Calandula. We started with 15 people and today about 100 jobs have already been created in our Unicanda Farm, developing the whole community.

Our employees at Zap are very committed to the Vidas Zap Project, an initiative launched in 2014. Its mission is to carry out actions of solidarity with the communities in which ZAP operates, such as foster homes, hospitals and primary and secondary schools in Angola that are part of the list of institutions sponsored by the project.

As part of this project, thousands of children have already been visited by our volunteers as well as by Angolan artists and celebrities who have joined this mission. We deliver donations, equipment for the institutions, we make improvements in the facilities and we follow their daily lives.

In December 2019, we had the fourth special broadcast of the “Solidarity Christmas” at ZAP Viva. It is a live program, with the presence of the hosts and with the participation of several artists who join this cause of solidarity that aims to help those who need it most. For three months, a campaign was developed to donate toys and children’s clothes and on the same day of the broadcast, spectators are invited to contribute via a telephone call. The amount raised and the donations are donated to Homes and Health Institutions that are part of the Vidas ZAP Project.

Also in Candando, for example, as part of our Social Responsibility global strategy, aimed at promoting sustainable development in the areas of health, education and child nutrition, we launched the Arredonda project in 2016. A very simple act, but one that makes all the difference: at the time of purchase at the supermarket, the customer has the possibility of rounding off the value and this surplus serves to benefit the David Bernardino Paediatric Hospital.

In its first edition, Arredonda raised 8,5M akz. The amount raised made it possible to equip the Paediatric Hospital with 29 air conditioning devices, ensuring the renewal of the air conditioning of the Intensive Care units, Intermediate Care, Emergency Bank, Day Hospital, External Consultation, and Pharmacy Depot. This initiative has contributed to improving the air quality and well-being of hospitalised children.

We maintain this project that is so important to us with the aim of continuing to raise funds to improve the conditions for the hospitalisation of the children of the David Bernardino Paediatric Hospital. This year, we reinforced Candando’s engagement and we are committed to doubling the rounded figure.

At the Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) we have taken a big step towards the development of Angola through our BFA Solidarity initiative, a Social Responsibility program that supports the development of Angolan non-profit organisations working with children and young people in the education, health and the social and financial inclusion sectors, three key areas for our country. Twelve institutions were elected, following a decision by a jury composed of members of civil society, with full independence from the bank.

Through our “More water, More life” project, at BFA we are also attentive to the needs caused by the drought in Cunene and have provided two million dollars to help more than 2400 families affected by the drought. Thus we ensure that these families have access to various services from drinking water, health, education, rehabilitation of water holes, and the improvement of the conditions of 15 schools so that children can have the education they deserve.

The potential of Social Responsibility in companies is endless. I am far from listing all the projects that make me so proud and that do so much for our country. And, fortunately, we have created nothing less than an incredibly positive cycle of good actions. These are practices that our employees take home to their communities, positively influencing their families, friends and neighbours in order to create good and altruism. In my companies, Angola always comes first.
